Comments: | Also introduced from Germany and North America in 1864-1910. Reintroduced in 1960-1965. Localized in South I. Range is declining (Ref. 52336). Species was once common but is now restricted to one lake and river in South Island (Ref. 6389). The early introductions were dispersed widely in numerous river systems over the whole of New Zealand and failed to establish. Later introductions in the early 1900s were concentrated on the Waiau River system, resulting in the establishment of Atlantic salmon in this system by the 1920s. By 1922 substantial numbers of fish were being caught by anglers in the Waiau system between 1931 and 1945. Rainbow trout were introduced into Lake Te Anau in the early 1920s and rapidly became established becoming predominant in the 1940s. Some authorities consider the decline of S. salar to competition with O. mykiss. In 1965 hatchery operations were reactivated to save the almost defunct population. Fish were introduced to other small lakes as well as maintain spawning in New Zealand occurred in Lake Anau tributaries in May/June, Young fish grew on in the rivers mostly migrating to the lake as smolts at 3 years of age. Most fish matured at 4 years of age and returned to the rivers annually and spawning for up to 5 years. (Ref. 13730). Known only from Lakes Fergus and Gunn in the upper Eglington Valley (Ref. 6452).
